October Volunteer Opportunities

 

DuPont Environmental Education Center - Peterson RefugePeterson Refuge - Out With Invasives!
A Division of Fish & Wildlife Partner Project
Saturday, October 20    

Time: Two Shifts: 9 a.m. - 10:30a.m.  and  10:30 a.m. - noon

Location: Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge on the Wilmington Riverfront           View map

                   *Meet at the DuPont Environmental Education Center

Project Description: This event will focus on cutting or removing some rapidly spreading pest plants like Asian bittersweet, Japanese honeysuckle, and bush honeysuckles. Volunteers will work in small crews with an experienced leader. There may also be an opportunity to put in a variety of wetland and upland plants. Removal will be done by hand pulling and/or with hand tools.

What to Bring/Wear: Work gloves, hand tools and water will be provided but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if available.

Age Requirement: Volunteers for this project must be at least 15 years old. Those under the age of 18 must provide a parental consent form. An adult must accompany volunteers under the age of 16.

Delaware Wild Lands Forest Restoration ProjectView of Drawyers Creek from the Hugh R. Sharp Farm

Project Description: The Division of Fish & Wildlife has partnered with Delaware Wild Lands (DWL) through a habitat restoration grant to restore native wildlife habitat at the DWL Hugh R. Sharp Farm property in Odessa. DWL is looking for volunteers to assist with the removal of invasive plants that are taking over the understory of important forest habitat. Removal will be done by hand pulling and/or with hand tools. Work gloves, hand tools, and water will be provided.

Project Description: The Division of Fish & Wildlife's Northern Delaware Wetlands Rehabilitation Program will be planting 2.7 acres with more than 1,000 plants of 30 different native species in a restored portion of the Refuge where previously dredged spoil has been landscaped into upland marsh islands. Volunteers will be picked up at the DuPont Environmental Education Ctr. during the course of the day. Join us for a morning or afternoon at this special wetland site!

What to Bring/Wear: Waterproof work/hiking boots and leather gloves are recommended.

Age Requirement: Volunteers for this project must be at least 16 years old. Those under the age of 18 must provide a parental consent form.

Woodland Beach Wineberry Weed-out

                   *Meet at the first boat ramp parking lot on Woodland Beach Rd. (on left before the town)

Project Description: Wineberry is an invasive plant that is covering and pushing out native plants in an important wildlife habitat at the Woodland Beach Wildlife Area. This is a unique, rich woods habitat that is uncommon on Delaware's Coastal Plain and harbors a variety of special plants. Join us as we work to remove the invasive wineberry and restore the native plants in this great habitat!

What to Bring/Wear: Work gloves will be provided but volunteers may also bring their own.

Age Requirement: Volunteers for this project must be at least 15 years old. Those under the age of 18 must provide a parental consent form. An adult must accompany volunteers under the age of 16.
