Enforcement is an important tool in carrying out DNREC's mission of protecting Delaware’s environment and enhancing the quality of life in the state. Environmental laws and regulations are established to protect and foster a healthy and sustainable environment. DNREC is committed to ensuring compliance with those laws and regulations and initiating enforcement action when warranted.

Civil enforcement within DNREC is conducted through the various regulatory programs in conjunction with the State Attorney General’s Office. Criminal enforcement is conducted by the Office of Community Services' Environmental Crimes Unit and includes enforcing programs housed within the Division of Air Quality, Division of Waste & Hazardous Substances, Division of Water and Division of Watershed Stewardship.
