’62 Storm 50th anniversary commemoration workshop events

Few residents who lived along the Delaware coast in 1962 will ever forget the coastal storm of the century. The powerful northeaster that pounded the coast from March 6 through March 8 that year destroyed dozens of oceanfront homes and businesses, flooded communities, and snatched away lives. Seven people were killed in Delaware alone. In conjunction with the Delaware Sea Grant College Program and the City of Rehoboth Beach, DNREC's Division of Watershed Stewardship will be hosting several activities to commemorate the past and to create awareness of potential future coastal storm impacts in Delaware. DNREC has begun an analysis of shoreline management alternatives for portions of the Delaware Bay shoreline. This analysis will evaluate the economic impacts (both positive and negative) of various management alternatives, such as beach nourishment and strategic shoreline retreat.
