 Project: Lightship Overfalls

Description: The goal of the Overfalls project is to dredge the entire berthing slip to a depth of nine feet below mean low tide. The timeframe calls for accomplishing this before the lightship returns in late January from repairs made in New Jersey.

Status: The crew working on the Overfalls project was able to resume operations on January 16. The crew has not been able to dredge for the past several weeks, due in part to staff vacation and state holidays over the Christmas and New Year holidays, but mostly because of ice in the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal and within the Overfalls slip. Thanks to higher-than-normal temperatures last week the ice melted and dissipated to the point where the crew could get to the dredge with their support vessels and resume dredging.

Project: Indian River

Description: The goal of the Indian River dredge project was to dredge an area that was particularly shallow and straighten curve in the channel both located between channel markers 73A/74A and 73/74. These two goals have been accomplished. The Shoreline & Waterway Management Section will now dredge as much of the channel as possible until the time of year restriction date (April 1).

Status: The crew working on the Indian River dredge project is in the process of configuring the pipeline and re-positioning the dredge. No dredging has taken place over the past several weeks, due in part to staff vacation and state holidays over the Christmas and New Year holidays, but mostly because of the river being frozen. On Jan. 16 the crew was able to access the dredge and resume operations.  Ice in the pipeline at the dredge was thawed with a heater and the crew turned the dredge around and transported it back to the area where they started in October. Once they get the pipeline configured they will dredge westward in order to eliminate two shallow areas found in the channel approaching Hunters Point.
