All UST Contractor Certification applicants are required to pass a separate written examination for each activity applied for (installation, retrofit, removal/closure in place) with a score of 80 percent or higher. There is no additional examination fee. Each exam may be attempted up to three times. If you have not achieved a score of 80 percent after three tries, you must wait a period of six months before submitting a new application and fee. The Tank Management Section (TMS) does not provide classes or training.
Exam questions are taken from the State of Delaware Regulations Governing Underground Storage Tank Systems (UST Regulations), relevant technical documents, and standard documents referenced in the UST Regulations. All certification exams are multiple choice and open book. Although handwritten notes are prohibited, copies of any State publication such as the UST Regulations, technical documents produced by the TMS, and any referenced standard listed in Part A, Section 3 of the UST Regulations may be brought into the examination room.
The UST Regulations and technical guidance are available for review and download on the TMS website. A partial list of standard documents referenced in the UST Regulations and their application to the certification activities are listed here. To purchase referenced standards, see the individual organizations' websites.
