Project description: Oriental bittersweet and wineberry are invasive plants that are covering areas of the 3D Archery Course at the Division of Fish & Wildlife's Ommelanden Hunter Education & Training Center. Bittersweet vines are out-competing native plants and blanketing wildlife habitat, while wineberry is filling in the understory. Grab a set of work gloves and pruners and join us as we work to remove these invasive plants!

What to bring/wear: Work gloves, hand saws and loppers will be provided, but volunteers may also bring their own.

Project description: Fish and Wildlife conservation staff and volunteers have been working to restore an ancient sand ridge forest, a forest composed mostly of oaks and pines that develops on ridges or dunes. Degraded by time, these areas are habitats of conservation concern in Delaware, with their restoration and/or improvement important to many plant and animal species. The goal of the project is to re-establish ancient sand ridge forest in the Nanticoke Wildlife Area to provide habitat for species of concern such as the frosted elfin, a rare butterfly that depends on plant species found only in Delaware’s ancient sand ridge forests.

Volunteers will be cutting up and removing downed trees and limbs, and logs. The work involves bending, lifting and possible use of handsaws, loppers.

What to bring/wear: Work gloves, hand saws and loppers will be provided, but volunteers may also bring their own.
