Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch

 

Compacting a day's trash at the Cherry Island Landfill in WilmingtonThe Division of Air and Waste Management's Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch (SHWMB) is responsible for controlling the storage, transport and disposal of solid, infectious and hazardous waste in Delaware and also coordinates recycling and yard waste management. The branch is composed of three groups: Waste Generation, Transport and Program Development; Waste Facilities; and Waste Reduction/Reuse/Recycling. The Waste Generation, Transport and Program Development Group regulates sites that generate hazardous and infectious waste by ensuring that they properly store, label and dispose of these waste. In addition, they permit companies to transport all regulated wastes and maintain the solid and hazardous waste regulations. The Waste Facilities Group permits solid and hazardous waste facilities, such as operating and closed landfills and transfer stations and also oversees cleanup of RCRA corrective action sites. This group maintains a staff presence at the DRPI industrial waste landfill and at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority's Cherry Island landfill to ensure these facilities are run according to Delaware regulations. The Waste Reduction/Reuse/Recycling Group’s mission is to find ways to reduce the amount of  solid waste generated in Delaware. They work to promote waste minimization, Pollution Prevention and recycling programs, enforce the Bottle Bill, support the Recycling Public Advisory Council (RPAC), run the yard waste drop-off sites in northern New Castle County. Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch staff are located in the Department’s main offices in the Richardson & Robbins Building in Dover.
